Androgeus, son of Minos and Pasiphaƫ, stood as a prominent prince of the royal house.1,2,3 He shared his lineage with siblings including Catreus, Deucalion, Glaucus, Acalle, Xenodice, Ariadne, and Phaedra.2 His own line continued through children named Sthenelus and Alcaeus.1

At the Panathenian festival games in Athens, he defeated all other competitors.3 Aegeus later sent him to fight the bull of Marathon.3 The accounts differ regarding the manner of his death.3 Some say the bull of Marathon killed him.3 Others claim jealous rivals murdered him while he traveled to Thebes for games honoring Laius.3

His death caused his father to abandon garlands and flutes during a sacrifice.3 Minos avenged Androgeus's death by preparing for war with retributive arms.4 The tragedy also led to a permanent change in sacrifices to the Graces in Paros.3 After a conflict, Heracles took the sons of Androgeus aboard his ship and gave them the island of Thasos to inhabit.1
