LIVING MYTHOS
A world where the heroes of legend have lives, ambitions and rivalries of their own, and history goes on whether or not you step in.
Living Mythos is the heart of every Godsunder game. It builds the world from the ancient myths, sets their heroes, monsters and gods in motion, and turns everything you do into new stories. It's being built now; this page describes how it's designed to work, and details may change.
The myths are the raw material
Every figure, place, creature and wondrous object comes from the ancient sources, catalogued in the Mythos Codex with the passage behind each fact. Where the ancient writers disagree, the codex keeps every version, so one campaign may follow Homer and the next another poet.
A myth isn't a fixed script. It's a situation with parts to play: a captor, a captive, a rescuer, someone who sends the hero on their way. In the Cyclops's cave, Odysseus might be the prisoner you free, the one who sent you there, a rival who got there first, or nowhere to be seen.
Rivals who don't wait for you
The heroes you didn't choose chase their own destinies across the map. Linger too long, and Heracles or Jason may reach a deed before you do.
- You'll hear it coming. News, rumours and travellers tell you who is heading where, and resting warns you when a rival nears a deed.
- Nothing is lost. When a rival gets there first, the story changes instead of disappearing: a blinded, vengeful Cyclops, or a rival hero who now needs rescuing.
- Fated deeds stay fated. Only Heracles faces the Nemean lion, and only Perseus takes Medusa's head.
- Your pace. A setting decides how busy your rivals are, from patient to restless.
The gods keep score
Every god has their own opinion of you, and it starts where the myths start. A son of Zeus may enjoy his father's favour and Hera's hatred at the same time.
Every deed is noticed
Sacrifices, kept and broken oaths, hubris, and harm to what a god protects all change how each god sees you. Every change comes with its reason, so you always know why Poseidon has turned against you.
Oaths you can build on
Swear an oath to a god and your standing holds firm through small slights. Break it, and you'll pay.
Gods rule their own lands
Heroes travel the whole world, but the gods' power stays in their own lands and sanctuaries. Leave Greece and Poseidon can't reach you, though he won't forget. Abroad, you can earn the favour of other powers on their own terms.
Talk to anyone, in your own words
Every figure can be spoken to freely, typed or out loud. They answer as the sources describe them, remember what you said last time, and know what news has reached them.
Words can change a fight. Invoke your lineage, an oath or a debt and a foe may back down or lose heart. The game checks every claim against what really happened, though: say you're a son of Poseidon when you aren't, and the lie will cost you.
Consequences that last
- A world that remembers. What you did hours ago still shapes what you're offered now.
- Oracles and prophecy. A prophecy given at Delphi is something the world works to fulfil, and something you can try to escape.
- Festivals and games. Heroes gather for the great games, and rivalries play out in public.
- Family and blood. Marriages, heirs and old grudges carry the story into new generations.
- A chronicle of your legend. Your campaign is recorded as it happens, ready to share.
Stories, not noise
A language model brings ideas, characters and words. The game's own rules decide what's possible, fair and true.
Checked before you see it
Every new quest is checked against the myths and the state of the world, then played through by the game itself to make sure it can be won and is fair, before it ever reaches you.
The rules decide
Living Mythos never decides who wins a fight, hands out rewards or completes a quest. The game's rules do, the same way every time.
Built to end well
A pacing system watches the rise and fall of your story, so tension builds, breaks and builds again, toward real endings rather than endless drift.
A game that gets better over time
Living Mythos is designed to run on your own PC, with no connection needed, and to scale with your hardware: a stronger graphics card runs a stronger model. You will also be able to plug in your own API key from an AI provider, or use an optional online service.
As better models arrive, each one is tested against the game's own checks before it becomes available, and it must tell better stories, not just longer ones. Your saves keep everything that has already happened, so an upgrade never rewrites your campaign.
One system for every myth
Living Mythos isn't Greek. The same system will carry every Godsunder title, each bringing its own gods, heroes, customs and sources. Own more than one and their worlds join, so a Greek hero abroad meets people who have never heard of him, and gods who owe him nothing.
Where it stands
The Mythos Codex is built from the ancient texts, and the first quests are already generated from it and play in the studio's build: Theseus's road from Troezen to Athens, then the poisoned cup and the sons of Pallas. Rival heroes, the gods' standing and the rest of Living Mythos are being built and tested in simulation next.
