2 ancient passages

Iambe, daughter of Pan and Echo, stood as an old crone in the household of Celeus.1 Her nature was defined by careful attentiveness toward the goddess Demeter.2 When the deity arrived, Iambe provided a jointed seat for her to occupy.2 She then draped a silvery fleece over that seat to ensure comfort.2

To break the goddess's sorrow, Iambe told jokes and quips that made Demeter smile and laugh.1,2 This wit pleased the goddess's moods in later times as well.2 Because of these actions, women now tell jokes at the Thesmophoria.1
