Panopeus, son of Phocus and Asterodeia, stood as a haughty and godlike man from the land of Phocis.1,2,3,4 He dwelt upon the mountain Taygetus, where his mother taught him the laws and rules of war.5

He served as an ally to Amphitryon during the raid on the Taphian islands.4 Panopeus was present at the gathering of heroes for the Calydonian Boar hunt.6 He fathered Aegle and the boxer Epeus, who later made the wooden horse.7,8,9,2,3 His brother was Crisus.

Considered too apt a scholar of war by his mother, he was slain by courageous Spartan warriors.5 He died while looking toward the sky where his master star shone, causing that star to sink from view.5 The Amyclaean Nymphs of Trivia wept for his death.5
