Polybotes, a giant born of Uranus and Gaia, fled across the sea while Poseidon pursued him during the battle.1 The Coans associate this fleeing giant with the promontory of Chelone on the island of Cos, where he reached while being chased.1,2

Poseidon broke off the island of Nisyrum and threw it at the giant, crushing him beneath the weight of the rock.1 Some accounts say Poseidon hurled a piece of Cos at Polybotes instead, leading to the claim that the giant lies beneath Cos rather than Nisyrus.3
