A true-to-life European flat oyster is a compact marine bivalve with a broad, irregularly rounded grey shell. The lower valve is cupped while the upper valve is flatter, concealing the soft body within. The shell features rough, coarse overlapping growth layers, shallow ridges, and uneven, flaky edges.
