The local community paid honors to Hecale by calling her Hecaline.1 She entertained the young hero Theseus during his expedition, affectionately caressing him and using diminutive names for him.1 Plutarch suggests the story of her hospitality to Theseus contains some truth, and people in nearby townships sacrificed to Zeus Hecalus in her honor.1
